Becoming a foster carer is one of the most rewarding decisions you can make. It gives a child a safe, stable environment and allows them to grow with the care and guidance they need. But if you're wondering who can foster, the answer is simpler than you may expect.
Fostering is about people
At Fostering2Inspire, we welcome people from all walks of life across Yorkshire. It doesn’t matter what your background is – what matters is that you can offer patience, empathy, and a secure home environment. We’re proud to work with a diverse group of carers because children come from all kinds of backgrounds too. A good foster carer is someone who’s ready to listen, learn and make a positive impact.
What do you need to foster?
There are a few essential criteria you'll need to meet before becoming a foster carer:
- You must be over 21 – There’s no upper age limit, and many of our most experienced carers began their journey later in life.
- You need a spare bedroom – Each foster child must have their own space. You don’t need to own your home; renters are very welcome.
- You don’t need to be a parent – Whether you’re single, married, or in a same-sex partnership, you don’t need to have raised children to foster.
- You must live in the UK permanently – Applicants must be British citizens or have permanent leave to remain.
- You need time and flexibility – Every child’s needs are different, and while many carers foster full-time, part-time arrangements can be considered.
- You need the right motivation – A genuine desire to support and encourage a young person is the most important quality of all.
